چکیده

We analyze the distribution of income and income tax of individuals in Japan for the fiscal year 1998. From the rank-size plots we find that the accumulated probability distribution of both data obey a power law with a Pareto exponent very close to −2. We also present an analysis of the distribution of the debts owed by bankrupt companies from 1997 to March, 2000, which is consistent with a power law behavior with a Pareto exponent equal to −1. This power law is the same as that of the income distribution of companies. Possible implications of these findings for model building are discussed. 2 Aoyama et. al., Pareto’s law for ...

Pareto index induced from the scale of companies

Employing profits data of Japanese companies in 2002 and 2003, we confirm that Pareto’s law and the Pareto index are derived from the law of detailed balance and Gibrat’s law. The last two laws are observed beyond the region where Pareto’s law holds. By classifying companies into job categories, we find that companies in a small scale job category have more possibilities of growing than those i...

Zipf’s Law, Pareto’s Law, and the Evolution of Top Incomes in the U.S.∗

Abstract We construct a tractable neoclassical growth model that generates Pareto’s law of income distribution and Zipf’s law of firm size distribution from idiosyncratic, firm-level productivity shocks. CEOs invest in risk-free assets as well as their own firms’ risky stocks, through which their assets and incomes depend on firm-level shocks. Using the model, we evaluate how changes in tax rat...
